“ALL I HEAR IS,
‘Boo!’”
One day, I (Ann) was stressing out, racking my brain trying to figure out how to find the time to work on my talk for the Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) event only two days away. With three little boys careening through our house, aimlessly throwing any and every object they could find, what should have been a simple and enjoyable task instead felt impossible.
The molehill had become nothing less than mountainous.
Then it hit me—a thought, that is. (I had also been hit by several of the boys’ miscellaneous projectiles.) This was a recurring thought: Things would be so much easier if Dave wasn’t so busy and could help out more. Seriously, why does he have three jobs anyway? Dave always said it was to help us financially, but sometimes it honestly felt like he was just using his many commitments as excuses to get out of the house—and out of the craziness we were living under in those days.
I was stuck, and I needed a little help from him—and that’s when suddenly I had an idea. Ask Dave! So I called him and said, “Hey, hon, how would you feel about speaking with me on Tuesday to the women at MOPS? They would love to hear my husband speak alongside me about marriage. I bet a man’s perspective is just what they need!”
“Sure! If my calendar is open, I’d be happy to do it with you.”
The stress immediately evaporated, and I took a big sigh of relief. Even though I had been upset with him, it’s always way easier—and honestly, way more fun—to speak alongside Dave than to do so alone. So that was that.
Until it wasn’t.
Tuesday morning arrived, and even as we were getting ready and shuffling the boys off to school, I felt that old familiar tug of disappointment. It was the same old whisper. Why do I do everything around here? Dave hardly helps at all. He doesn’t even know the routine or what needs to be done! This internal monologue of griping had become my secret habitual pattern—so much so that the complaining in my head had become as familiar as brushing my teeth or putting on my clothes. By that point, I was doing it without even thinking about it.
And yet, here we were, on our way to share together on the topic of having a healthy marriage. Yikes! What was I going to say? The truth was, I believed I was doing everything in this marriage! If Dave would only help more or even just listen a little more, I knew we would be great. As you can imagine, these were not the thoughts I wanted to share with the women. How encouraging would that be?
We arrived at the venue, and women began filling the room. I could tell by their energy that they were excited about hearing our insights on marriage. They probably felt like we were experts since we had written and delivered many series on the subject at church, not to mention that we had spoken at many weekend marriage conferences around the country.
